PhD position on cartilage tissue engineering for joint restoration 100%
The Cartilage Engineering group (Prof. Andrea Barbero) at the Department of Biomedicine, University Hospital Basel is seeking a PhD candidate for a project focused on chondral and osteochondral defects regeneration. The position is fully funded by the SNF and will be performed in collaboration with the Biomedical Laser and Optics Laboratory (Prof. Ferda Canbaz) and the Bio-Inspired Robots for Medicine Laboratory (Prof. Georg Rauter) at the Vetsuisse Faculty (University of Zurich). Starting date is September 2024. The Cartilage Engineering group is an interdisciplinary team with expertise in the biological and engineering sciences, as well as clinical trials with cell-based treatments for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration. The city of Basel, which is located on the borders of both France and Germany, is one of the leading life sciences, pharmaceutical and biotechnological centers in the world.
The candidate is expected to:
- design and conduct in vitro experiments, using diverse 3D culture methods for data collection
- explore interactions between laser ablated joint samples and therapeutic cells
- perform characterization of joint tissue samples obtained from regenerative tissues in animal studies
- generate scientific texts, including abstracts, publications, presentations and protocols
- background in musculoskeletal research, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, or tissue engineering (strong advantage)
- experience with cell and tissue culture, RTqPCR, immunoassays, viability assays, microscopy, or histology (strong advantage)
- excitement to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment
- independent thinking, ambition, focus on discovery and dedication to perform research of the highest quality
- excellent communication and writing skills (English)
