The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) is a core unit of the University of Bern, which carries the responsibility for in vivo research. The EAC aims at providing optimal infrastructure to achieve the best quality of basic, translational and clinical research involving animals. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the “culture of care” and compliance to guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.

GMO distress monitoring manager
Area of responsibility
Your specific responsibility are the management of data sheets and other forms for "genetically modified organisms" (GMO), the distress monitoring of the animals within the framework of the legally required stress monitoring of GMO animals (Art. 124 of the Animal Welfare Ordinance and Art. 12 the Animal Experiments Ordinance) and support with the animal management database Pyrat.
• GMO forms and distress monitoring:
o Advice and support for researchers in correctly completing the GMO data sheets, nomenclature-compliant strain names and form M; oversight.
o Regular updates of the data sheets and forms M in Animex and Pyrat.
o Regular controls in animal husbandry regarding the implementation of stress-reducing measures
• Pyrat database animal management system
o Training of users (i.e. personnel of laboratory animal facilities, researchers)
o Data management (creation of new lines, mutations, upload of documents, content update, form CH)
o Regular checks on the status of the distress monitoring of the animal lines being investigated
• Regular communication with the Heads of EAC, Animal Facilities, Veterinarians, Animal Welfare Officer and Users
The position will report to the Head of EAC.
Requirements
• Degree in veterinary medicine or natural sciences/biology. Further training/experience in the field of animal science and PhD are an advantage.
• Robust knowledge of genetic modifications and breeding of experimental rodents
• Experience in carrying out distress monitoring is an advantage
• Advanced knowledge and experience with animal management programs (e.g. Pyrat, e-rats).
• Proficient with Word and Excel office applications.
• You are a reliable, flexible, team player, well organized and service-oriented person with quick comprehension and independent, very careful, diligent way of working.
• Comfortable in English and German
