The Partnering Commercial Assessment Leaders (PCAL) team is part of the Portfolio, Strategy and Insights (PS&I) department whose mission is to shape Roche’s pipeline, maximize our portfolio, anticipate needs and deploy solutions to internal and external customers, by providing powerful insights and influencing decisions at the highest level of the Pharma organization.
Your mission as the Head of PCAL, is to lead a team to deliver objective market assessment and valuation of global business late stage opportunities You ensure that you and the team are strategic thought partners to Roche Partnering (PP) and senior stakeholders on a range of business and strategic questions related to the path to value and strategic fit of external assets in the existing product portfolio. This is a critical role, connecting the commercial perspective with partnering ambitions, and influencing enterprise-level decision-making with market potential expertise.
Lead a team of experienced Partnering Commercial Assessment Leaders who through their role as strategic thought partners representing the commercial view for a given licensing or M&A project, and who interact with senior stakeholders from Pharma Partnering (PP) and GPS. The team is accountable to deliver a commercial assessment, a key guidance to the strategic decisions, for acquiring late stage external assets. This involves identifying the analysis approach, patient flow and related revenue forecasting, bringing in external/competitor perspective, and providing strategic context for the commercial opportunity vis-a-vis the internal portfolio and/or other external opportunities.
Develop the team by guiding and coaching the team members, who collaborate with and challenge senior stakeholders in individual projects, and participate in governance meetings as needed (LSPC, PLT, etc.). Enable and support team members in a complex, fast-paced, matrix environment, across numerous time zones, with the ability to respond effectively to unpredictable and time-sensitive workload, often dictated by external context and events.
Act as a key thought partner and challenge the Partnering Leadership by representing the GPS Commercial position, both strategically and broadly to shape our future and realize our ambitions
Be GPS’ representative in PP on topics such as GPS portfolio priorities, and Portfolio Advisory Team perspectives on health of internal portfolio, Pharma International perspectives, commercial viability and other commercialization strategies
Bring a holistic perspective on external innovation into the Strategy team and GPS, and through enterprise thinking help to “connect the dots” across the portfolio and therapeutic areas, to drive strategic choices for the portfolio of the future.
Represent your team and GPS to influence and challenge Partnering processes and goals to continue to evolve risk analysis, creative approaches in new innovative areas, and collaboration with other functions
Align and influence perspectives across Roche Partnering Heads, GPS Senior Leadership (GPS Head and TA Heads), PD and REDs leadership with a OneRoche mindset. Anticipating upcoming needs (eg increase late stage deals based on portfolio characteristics), to flex and evolve team’s capabilities, to prepare Senior and Executive stakeholders, and drive understanding of the dynamic strategic context internally and externally.
Consistently seek to evolve the commercial assessment process including: rigorous commercial assessment, applying portfolio strategy, risk analysis, modeling approach, and external landscape evaluation for assets & technologies within Roche core TAs and innovation assessment outside existing core diseases
Provide PCAL portfolio perspective to strategy teams (Portfolio Strategy, PAT) and GPS Head, so that the late stage Partnering portfolio (at both the asset and portfolio-level) is included in a comprehensive and timely manner in enterprise-wide strategic portfolio assessments.
Deep understanding of the Pharma and Biotech Industry and assessment of commercial and business opportunities, with varied experience across different parts of the business
Significant experience leading teams involved in strategy and commercial assessment in the pharmaceutical or related industry
Expertise in integrating and synthesizing complex concepts and perspectives from multiple sources to enable objective and informed strategic decision-making, advising approaches/scenarios, and thriving in ambiguity
Very strong and experienced communicator with demonstrated ability to build/maintain effective relationships with senior leaders, aligning, influencing, and connecting effectively challenging different strategic points of view across the value chain
Robust understanding of the current and future commercial context, portfolio, and strategy
Respected objective voice, and strong interpersonal skills - often sought out by group functions to advise and guide

15+ years experience across the value chain in related areas in Pharma/Biotech
Advanced Science (PhD, MD) and/or Business degree (MBA) is a plus
