Research assistant (80 – 100%) in the field of Legionella monitoring in wastewater treatment systems
The Department of Environmental Microbiology (Umik) and Engineering (ENG) have a joint vacancy for a
Bacteria from the genus Legionella cause Legionnaires’ disease and other clinical manifestations. Swiss case notifications of Legionnaires’ disease have increased continuously during the last two decades, and the Swiss incidence rate is one of the highest in Europe. Wastewater treatment systems have been identified as an emerging source of Legionella growth and contamination, but comprehensive data does not exist for Switzerland.
We seek someone to support a survey of Legionella in wastewater treatment systems across Switzerland with sampling, molecular analysis, and some specific laboratory research. The position is funded for a one-year period with an attractive remuneration package. The assistant will lead the hands on research, supported by senior scientists from both departments. The workplace location is Dübendorf near Zurich.
We encourage applications from outstanding and highly motivated candidates with a Bachelor or Master degree in environmental science/microbiology/engineering and a strong interest in applied research. Previous hands-on experience with DNA extraction, ddPCR/qPCR, sequencing methods and/or microscopy would be a definite advantage.
We are looking for an individual with strong interest to work in a team, hands-on laboratory skills, and good project management abilities. A problem-solving attitude, flexibility, ability to work independently and ability to communicate clearly are all essential for this position. Fluency in English and at least one of the languages German/French/Italian would be an advantage.
