Role Summary

Group Data Technology (GDT) enables the bank to democratize and commercialize the bank’s data via world-class technologies and engineering capabilities.  We partner with business and technology teams to contribute towards HSBC’s Data and Technology Strategy, and ultimately deliver world-class banking services to our customers.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Principal Engineer - Data Mastering and Assets Services.

This role reports to Head of Data Asset Technologies (DAT) with a regional reporting line into the Head of Group Data Technology in Hyderabad.  The individual in this role is empowered and accountable to develop and grow the engineering capability of the group wide Customer Data platform team, partnering with a global technology organisation to build global, enduring, best in class new solutions.

Data Asset Technologies is a global department within Group Data Technology (GDT) and has teams around the globe supporting operational master data solutions for Data & Analytics Office all parts of the bank globally. The organization is rapidly transforming both its people structure and ways of working to better align with our vision for Data as an asset, and therefore the need to increase the speed and quality of delivery. We are adopting a DevOps model driving agile delivery and building a strong product ownership group. The engineering is c.450 technology professionals, of which c.250 are in India.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties with a high level of competence:

• The role is to lead and drive the use of technology in the delivery of products to external clients and internal staff. The role is to be the driving force in technology engineering by providing leadership and technical guidance to teams, to deliver excellent products to clients and internal staff. This role is pivotal to the success of the DAT team, carrying it with a lot of influence within GDT and across the HSBC Group
• This is a hands-on role; we expect the candidate will be able to lead by example and have practical experience of building services and technical architecture to deliver digital solutions. A successful candidate will be expected to spend a large amount of time pairing with other developers and communicating not only through emails, meetings, etc but blogs, videos, talks and so on.
• A successful candidate will have a high degree of bias to action and will be able to demonstrate influence through code to large parts of an organization.

In this role, you will:

• Creates innovative and simple engineering solutions to make the bank better, safer, faster.
• Has data and the  customer in every conversation and decision, be passionate about their needs and continually strive to improve their experience.
• Help to define and engineer the direction and strategy of holistic Digital solutions with the key sponsors that include the GDT Chief Architect, the Head of DAT, the Chief Party Data architect and business product owners..
• Works with the product owners and other teams to ensure that business and technical requirements are understood, and teams are following best practice during implementation.
• Identifies risks and opportunities, both technical and business.
• Leads the best practice in balancing the use of document style data bases, and the balance between data storage features with business capabilities.
• Will help the architecture teams build the microservice, domain centric solutions for the whole bank.
• Lead the creation of a rapid prototyping culture to innovate and fail-fast helping the team learn and improve.
• Works with developers to improve their skills in building, simpler, faster, and cheaper services.
• Understands and promote the importance of the resilience and supportability of solutions – availability, performance, monitoring and incident response.
• Takes accountability and ownership of solutions.
