Postdoctoral position - new tools to study colloidal gel aging
A postdoctoral position for one year is availbale at the ETH Zurich, in a collaboration between Profs. Jan Vermant, Prof. Peter Fischer and an industrial partner. The position fis ideal for someone who ocuses on the rheology of soft materials. The project focuses on an industrial problem, but touches upon the fundamentals of structure proerty relation in gels.
The project aims to develop tools for studying the influence of external stresses on the macroscopic stability of colloidal gels. The goal is to develop experimental tools to interrogate the transition from elastic to plastic deformation in colloidal and macromolecular gels. Model systems, which reflct the industrial realm, will be used and studied by a combination of advanced rheological techniques and advanced in situ probing techniques (microscopy or scattering based). The experimental data will be used to evaluate if models describing the transition from elastic to plastic (yielding) can be extended to include external noise - such as mechanical vibrations.
Ideal candidates hold an PhD/doctoral degree in physics, (Chemical or materials) engineering, food science and technolgoy, material sciences or a related discipline and have a background in soft matter, physical chemistry, chemical or material engineering, or related fields. Experience in rheologiy or mechanics is beneficial. Additionally, they are fluent in English (oral and written). They show enthusiasm for conducting original research in an interdisciplinary and international team, and strive for scientific excellence.
ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits. The soft materials laboratory (Prof. Vermant) is part of the deparment of materials and more information can be found on the website. Prof. Fischer is member of the institute of food nutrition and health.
