The Mertz Lab is seeking a highly motivated postdoc (PhD or MD-PhD) to study infectious diseases and host-pathogen interactions. The successful candidate is expected to take the lead role in projects, publish manuscripts as the first author, and present data at lab meetings and international conferences. We are looking for a scientist who is excited to discover and answer questions related to infectious diseases and immunology, and who demonstrates critical thinking, scientific rigor, and attention to detail. This position offers a unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research aimed at enhancing pathogen detection and immune response characterization in pathology samples through the implementation of innovative technologies.
Your position
  • Participate in the detection and characterization of rare/novel pathogens in collaboration with clinical laboratories via metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), metatranscriptomics and spatial transcriptomics technologies
  • Leverage a large collection of pathology samples for epidemiological purposes
  • Characterize the immune landscape in normal and pathological samples to improve infectious pathology diagnostics
  • Establish independent research projects including application for third-party funding
  • Supervise students and junior staff
Your profile
  • PhD or MD/PhD with 2-3 years postdoc experience
  • Strong experience in molecular biology, ideally in the fields of molecular microbiology, infectiology and/or immunology
  • Hands-on experience with PCR, qPCR and next-generation sequencing (library preparation, sequencing) including data analysis and interpretation
  • Experience in bioinformatics (proficiency in R/Python, implementation of analysis workflows) would be advantageous
  • Basic knowledge in handling of human samples, histology, immunochemistry and other methods in the field of pathology would be a plus, but can also be acquired
  • Well organized, highly motivated, with a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
We offer you
A stimulating, challenging and interdisciplinary translational research environment, state-of-the-art technologies and core facilities, and attractive employment conditions. We offer you the opportunity to work in a dynamic team of international researchers, mentorship, and a perspective for your professional development towards independence to build your own group. Close collaboration with neighboring oncology, immunology, and cancer immunology labs ensures a large, dynamic, and vibrant scientific network.
