PhD Student on electrochemical approaches in radioanalytics

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For the Radioanalytics Group we are looking for a

PhD Student on electrochemical approaches in radioanalytics

Your tasks
Equipment and experience from a previous PhD project will help you get started. You will be member of the Radioanalytics Group at the Department of Radiation Safety and Security. Our group works closely with the Laboratory of Radiochemistry (LRC) and our academic partner Prof. Patrick Steinegger (PSI/ETHZ). You will also be part of the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETHZ. At both PSI and ETHZ, you will be exposed to and inspired by a broad scientific portfolio, as well as courses and lectures taught by world-renowned experts.

Your tasks will include:
  • The development of novel electrochemical techniques for use in radionuclide analysis and the research on the underlying mechanisms of the chemical pathways involved
  • Your main goal will be to extend the potential range beyond aqueous solutions to be able to access more ions and radionuclides
  • Plan and perform experiments using model systems and apply successful procedures to real-world samples
  • Potentially extend the tools developed for applied radioanalytics to fundamental research with superheavy elements
  • Teaching at ETH Zurich (ETHZ) in the chemistry labs for undergraduate students

Your profile
  • Master's degree in chemistry from a recognized university and excellent academic track record which qualify for doctoral studies at ETHZ
  • Strong interdisciplinary interests and the ability to combine different fields of chemistry, i.e., electrochemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, radiochemistry and some nuclear physics
  • Willingness and responsibility to work in controlled areas and perform experiments using radioactive substances
  • Perseverance and a talent for analysis, instrument handling and some basic engineering skills
  • Ability and desire to publish and present your work in scientific literature and at national/international workshop and conferences

We offer
Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
