PhD Position in Atomic and Molecular Quantum Magnetism
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
PhD Position in Atomic and Molecular Quantum Magnetism
The nanotech@surfaces Laboratory is a multidisciplinary team of physicists and chemists, dedicated to developing and characterizing novel functional materials and devices based on nanoscale surface effects, utilizing a combination of experimental and computational approaches. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate fascinated by quantum nanoscience, with a strong interest in surface and spin physics.
Your tasks
You will play a key role in conducting systematic research on the quantum coherent manipulation of spins on surfaces. Particular emphasis is placed on molecular spin systems, where you can harness quantum correlations of many-body spin systems, enabled by atomically precise bottom-up synthesis. In our newly established lab, you will use low-temperature, high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and tuning fork atomic force microscopy (QPlus AFM), combined with electron spin resonance techniques.
Your profile
Required qualifications include a Master's degrees in Physics, Nanoscience, Electronic Engineering, Quantum Chemistry or related fields, with a strong background in solid-state physics, quantum magnetism, UHV surface science, and/or nanoscience. Prior experience with scanning probe microscopy, preferably with a focus on magnetic nanostructures or spin resonance studies, and programming in Python would be advantageous. We are looking for a highly motivated energetic team player who is curiosity driven and has excellent communication skills in English.
Our offer
Join our world-class team to explore atomic-scale quantum systems, collaborating with top-tier researchers in chemical synthesis, analytical method development, and atomistic simulations. Located in the Zurich Area, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technologies (Empa) offers outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment and competitive salaries. This fulltime position is immediately available upon agreement.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
