Mechanical Engineer (RCS-PRJ-2024-158-LD)
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
Introduction
Have you always wanted to be challenged with the design and the installation of physics detector for one of the world's most complex and exciting scientific experiments? Then this opportunity is for you! Join the largest particle physics research laboratory in the world, CERN! Take part!
You will join the CERN Neutrino Platform engineering office within the Research & Computing Sector (leading the engineering studies for the DUNE detector and its cryostat to be installed at SURF (Lead, SD, USA).
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of the group in charge of the finalisation of the detector design, its installation studies and its fabrication. You will play a key role in the detector integration and structural analysis. You will also take a role in the R&D, design, production, testing, commissioning, and development work associated with complex and highly specialised mechanical equipment and systems for the DUNE Cryostat and Detector.
Functions
In close collaboration with the cryostat and the detector experts you will:
- Support the goals of the Neutrino Platform project, in particular for the construction, installation and operation of the LBNF cryostats, as well as for the design of the DUNE neutrino detectors;
- Manage complex mechanical projects from initial study phase to commissioning;
- Collaborate with users to define integration requirements, ensuring seamless coordination of the structures for various needs;
- Contribute to the design, production, assembly, and the project follow-up of large membrane cryostats to be used in short and long neutrino baselines facilities;
- Develop and execute plans for fabrication and installation, along with their associated procedures;
- Conduct technical studies to implement efficient and reliable detector support systems taking into consideration large number of interdependent systems;
- Lead the validation of structure designs and ensure they meet project requirements.
- Coordinate teams before and during the detector installation phase;
- Take part in the procurement process, including drafting technical specifications, evaluating tenders, and managing contracts with industry partners.
- Support the R&D program at CERN’s Neutrino Platform, with a focus on advancing the next generation of neutrino detectors, particularly in the areas of manufacturing and integration.
