ETH Zürich
Junior Fabrication Engineer
Junior Fabrication Engineer

The ETH Zurich - PSI Quantum Computing Hub explores and solves long-standing challenges in quantum computing. It develops new technology and approaches which benefit from a coherent, farsighted vision, and it provides services to the quantum community through collaborations with academia and industry. The Quantum Computing Hub hosts two laboratories which specialize in two of the leading quantum computing platforms: superconducting circuits and trapped ions.

Project background

At the Quantum Device Lab, led by Prof. Andreas Wallraff at the Department of Physics of ETH Zurich, we fabricate quantum devices using micro- and nanofabrication techniques. We use the devices to conduct state-of-the-art experimental research in quantum information science and technology, circuit quantum electrodynamics, and quantum optics with superconducting electronic circuits. Furthermore, we work on scaling the developed technologies to build large-scale quantum computers.

Job description

We are looking for a motivated JuniorFabrication Engineer to join our young and dynamic research team at the forefront of quantum technologies. You will play a crucial role in the development of quantum processor chips, working on devices that incorporate a few tens of qubits.

Your primary responsibilities will involve:

  • Engaging in cleanroom micro- and nano-fabrication.
  • Executing existing fabrication processes.
  • Conducting process analysis and performing device metrology.
  • Participating in process optimization and contributing to research and development efforts.
  • Preparing detailed technical and scientific documentation of your work.

You will be working closely with scientists from the Quantum Device Lab who have the lead in characterizing and operating the fabricated devices.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated fabrication engineer. Candidates ideally have experience in an academic and/or industrial setting in a number of the following areas:

  • Use of cleanroom facilities, electron beam lithography, photolithography, dry and wet etching, thin film deposition, surface characterization, metrology (optical-, scanning-electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy), material science, UHV technology, and cryogenic systems.
  • Process development, fabrication troubleshooting, failure/root cause analysis, and statistical process control.
  • Python or Matlab/Octave fluency or willingness to acquire such.

You are expected to demonstrate a high level of initiative and independence, have experience in systematically documenting your work and should be skilled in communicating your findings to collaborators in a multidisciplinary environment.

You must hold a Master degree or equivalent in micro- and nanofabrication, material science, physics, electrical engineering or a related field. A PhD degree can be helpful but is not required.

You must possess excellent English communication skills; knowledge of German is a plus.

We offer
  • Embedding into the rapidly developing field of quantum technology and exposure to a wide range of challenges and learning opportunities.
  • Collaborative, interdisciplinary R&D environment.
  • Rewarding, inspiring working environment with a flat hierarchy and open culture in a diverse and international team.
  • Access to state-of-the-art cleanroom fabrication facilities located at ETH Hönggerberg, at IBM Rüschlikon and at PSI Villigen.
