Electrical Design Engineer (EN-EL-DDO-2024-139-GRAP)

Your responsibilities

The Electrical Engineering Group (EN-EL) at CERN is responsible for the electrical power-distribution network (from 400 kV to 400/230V), for the fibre-optics infrastructure, and for signal and DC-power cabling for the accelerator complex.

You will join the Electrical Design and Documentation Office (EN-EL-DDO). You will take on an electrical designer role to work mainly on multiple small distribution studies and with time you will be required to take on a larger electrical substation consolidation projects in parallel. You will do the design of low voltage distribution networks, cable sizing, equipment sizing and LV protection studies, CAD drafting activities; with the objective of taking on projects of increasing complexity.

This is the perfect opportunity for a junior engineer to further establish their existing knowledge of low voltage distribution circuits by putting it into practice and to learn about general design planning.

It is expected that you have the foundation and theoretical background of the following tasks:

• Power systems and electro technique
• Design of electrical distribution circuits
• Preparing design drawings
• Preparing calculation notes
• Preparing bills of material and cabling tables for electrical-related equipment

In addition to the design tasks listed above, you will be required to:

• Do the planning and organisation of the small design studies with the aim of optimising current procedures
• Create and modify drawings in BricsCAD
• Work with CERNs equipment databases

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

• A good understanding of low voltage distribution networks (selectivity, completing calculation notes, knowledge of European LV standards, protection, knowledge of UPS' and generators, protection of circuits for indirect contact, knowledge of different types of earthing systems, safety networks)
• A good understanding of power systems; voltage drop calculations, short circuit calculations, understanding fault levels, dimensioning of cables
• Experience on low voltage design calculation tools (ElecCalc, Caneco or similar software)
• Proficient in AutoCAD

Beneficial skills/or knowledge:

• Experience on the design of lighting systems for buildings and external areas using DIALux
• Experience with E-PLAN or similar software
• Experience in the design of medium voltage distribution networks
• Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• You have a professional background in Electrical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
  • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
  • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

This position requires:

• Work in Radiation Areas.
• Interventions in underground installations.
• A valid driving licence.

• A monthly stipend ranging between 6212 and 6828 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
