Researcher position in environmental chemistry (PFASs)
The group of Environmental Chemistry at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated and qualified person to fill a position for the development of an inventory of fluoropolymer uses and alternatives to fluoropolymers. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team working on the risk assessment and management of chemicals in the environment with a strong focus on PFASs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).
The position is part of our long-term activities in the area of uses, properties and environmental fate of, and alternatives to, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Fluoropolymers (FPs) are an important group of PFASs for which the landscape of uses is complicated, heterogeneous, and poorly characterized. In the current international discussion about a restriction of PFAS uses, information about FP properties, FP uses, and possible alternatives to FPs is much needed. A particular question to be addressed in this project is the differentiation of essential and non-essential uses of FPs. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with international experts of the Global PFAS Science Panel, GPSP, and also in collaboration with a network of industry, government and NGO experts.
As a researcher in this project, your responsibilities will include:
- Collection of information about fluoropolymer types, properties, uses and use amounts as well as alternatives to fluoropolymers from a wide range of sources (scientific literature, technical reports, product reports by companies, patents, etc.)
- Setting up an inventory of fluoropolymer types and uses and suitable alternatives (where available)
- Mapping the available information and analyzing gaps in the available information
- Assessing as many fluoropolymer uses as possible according to the Essential-Use Concept
- Preparing reports and a scientific publication about the project findings
- Participating in meetings and workshops
- You have a strong background in chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer sciences or related fields
- The ability of handle and interpret technical information from a wide range of fluoropolymer use areas
- You possess strong communication and writing skills in English
- Enabling effective collaboration and the preparation of scientific publications and reports
- Able to work independently and goal-oriented and can familiarize with new topics in a timely manner
We welcome applications from applicants with a doctoral degree and without.
Joining our research team offers a stimulating and collaborative environment, with a competitive salary and opportunities for professional growth and interaction with international experts in the field of environmental chemistry and chemicals assessment. The position is funded for a duration of 1 to 1.5 years (at 100% appointment; 80% is also possible). Start of the position is as soon as possible.
