Project Background
The scientific IT group is part of Empa corporate services department. We are a team of software engineers, high performance computing (HPC) and data management specialists who develop solutions to support researchers in their daily work.
We are looking for a software/data engineer to deploy a graph-based tool for internal information search to support the digitalization of corporate services.
Job Description
You will lead the software and requirement engineering for an internal project in machine learning and semantic data. We want to deploy GraphSearch, a semantic search engine to help users query internal information sources about ongoing projects and enrich it with contextual data.
Your primary task will be the integration of existing Empa data sources into the tool, their customization to our needs and the deployment of the solution on our infrastructure. This requires good skills in collaboration across departments and institutions as well as the ability to work independently.
In addition to these activities, you will participate in internal projects aligned to your skills and interests as needs arise.
Your Responsibilities
- Data engineering and software development for the deployment of GraphSearch project at Empa
- Requirements and data engineering to coordinate the integration of multiple data sources across the organization into the platform.
- General software development and data science activity for internal customers
This position suits a data engineer with strong software engineering and collaboration skills, ideally with experience in data pipelines and backend engineering. Knowledge of the research environment is not required but is of advantage.
Requirements
- A degree in computer science or in engineering or scientific discipline with strong computational background
- Experience in developing data pipelines or backend systems.
- Experience with backend programming languages like python or java
- Willingness to acquire new technical skills.
- Effective communication and self-organization skills
- Knowledge of devops practices (git, CI/CD, containerization)
- Ability to work in a team
- Good English skills required, German is a plus
